What Is Bhitargarh?
Bhitargarh is an ancient fortified archaeological site in Panchagarh, Bangladesh. It is located in Amarkhana Union under Panchagarh Sadar Upazila and is known for the remains of a large fortified settlement.
Archaeological research has identified multiple defensive enclosures, ramparts, moats and structural remains at the site. The settlement covers a very large area and provides an important window into the ancient history of the Panchagarh region.
Where Is Bhitargarh Located?
Bhitargarh is located in Amarkhana Union of Panchagarh Sadar Upazila, Panchagarh District. The archaeological site is approximately 15–16 kilometres northeast of Panchagarh town, according to archaeological research and related documentation.
Its location in the northern part of Bangladesh also places it close to the historic and geographic routes connecting the Bengal region with areas farther north.
The Fortified Settlement of Bhitargarh
One of the most remarkable features of Bhitargarh is its fortification system. Archaeological investigations have identified four concentric quadrangles created by earth and brick ramparts.
These enclosures were separated from one another and protected by defensive structures. Moats were also associated with the fortification system, adding another layer of protection around the settlement.
The remains provide evidence of organized settlement planning and defensive construction in the region.
Archaeological Discoveries at Bhitargarh
Systematic archaeological investigation at Bhitargarh began in 2008 under the Center for Archaeological Studies at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh.
Research has documented the remains of ramparts, moats, foundations of religious and secular structures, irrigation features and different archaeological artifacts.
These discoveries have helped researchers understand more about the settlement pattern, construction methods and cultural landscape of ancient Bhitargarh.
Why Is Bhitargarh Important?
Bhitargarh is important because it represents a large fortified settlement with a complex layout. Its archaeological remains can help researchers study how people organized settlements, protected important areas and used the surrounding landscape in earlier periods.
The site is also significant for understanding the wider historical development of Panchagarh and northern Bangladesh.
Bhitargarh and Maharajar Dighi
Maharajar Dighi is another important historical feature associated with the Bhitargarh area. It is a large water body located within the wider archaeological landscape.
The combination of fortified structures, water management features and archaeological remains makes the Bhitargarh area particularly interesting for visitors interested in history and heritage.
A Place for History and Archaeology Lovers
Bhitargarh is different from many popular tourist destinations because much of its value comes from the landscape itself and the archaeological remains found there.
